Activity 8.1: Written Report
The Issues and Challenges Linked to IoT
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a giant network of linked things that collects, identifies, and analyzes data and information. Smart things such as television, wristwatch, and phones are examples of gadgets that are connected or can be connected to the Internet.
IoT has a wide range of applications to the world. It is utilized in homes, cities, environment, energy, logistics, agriculture, retail, and healthcare. Immediately after its emergence in the online realm, IoT abrupt growth has been recognized. However, as convenient as it is, the Internet of Things faces challenges and issues.
Due to high demand, one of the major issues linked to the use of IoTs is electronic waste. High production rate of these technologies may greatly impact the environment since some e-waste contains lead. Such waste is harmful to our surroundings, especially if not disposed of properly. Unfortunately, the recycling rate of electronic waste is low and currently in the amount of about 20% (Thebalancesmb, 2020).
Also, this innovation can cause shortages to our resources in the long run. The rise in the production of electronic devices due to high market demand has led to the consumption of various harmful chemicals, water, and fossil fuels. Also, different types of metals are being utilized to produce electronic devices such as copper, silver, gold, palladium, and many more. The increase in the utilization and fast consumption of limited resources or raw materials leads to some of these resources to be rare or already rare to exist. Additionally, IoT technologies use a significant amount of energy because it is needed to support the production and operation of the IoT devices. This contradicts one of its main purposes, which is to minimize energy consumption.
Lastly, as the Internet of Things relies on information from users, it might pose risks on the privacy and security of a person. Personal information may be disclosed and manipulated due to vulnerability.
Amidst the ease in using the Internet of Things, it is essential to monitor the possible issues and challenges that may arise. Rapid developments in IoT technologies must be carefully monitored from a resource and environmental point of view to ensure balanced and sustainable development of IoT products.
